The Patriot
In the movie The Patriot, the main character, Benjamin Martin, lives on a plantation in South Carolina with his seven children. His wife passed away; therefore, when he joined the militia, his sister-in-law takes care of his children. This shows that in this movie, women mainly stayed at home and cared for their children while the men went to war or work. Benjamin Martin has the same lifestyle as most of the colonists in this time period. He is depicted as having the correct economic, social, and political positions. In this movie, there were very few loyalists and many colonists. Loyalists were portrayed as despised by the Patriots and unfaithful to their land. They were despised by all the Patriots and considered traders. The British that are shown in The Patriot are closely related to how they really acted. They are shown as mean, violent, and careless of what they do to people homes and children. They would have done the horrible things that were shown in order to win America. The Continentals were less vicious than the British. The Colonists did not have nearly as much experience as the British so they were not as vicious. Slaves in this movie are not depicted correctly. In real life the slaves would not have had nearly as much freedom as shown in the movie. Benjamin’s slaves had relaxed lives and were more like servants than slaves. They did their job, but had lots of freedom and did not have to call the children by master. Although sometimes the depictions are incorrect, The Patriot mainly portrays what really happened in the American Revolution.
